Rosacea is a very common skin condition which often begins with just a tendency to blush or flush more easily than other people do. Rosacea can sometimes be mistaken for acne, sensitivity to the sun or "just" blushing as it usually affects only the face. Rosacea can also affect neck, upper chest, scalp, and ears and may even involve the eye area. Generally it affects the central area of the face where normal blushing occurs along the cheeks, nose, and chin.

Triggers that cause episodes of flushing and blushing play a part in the development of rosacea. Most reported factors are:

  1. Environmental factors. Exposure to high temperature extremes, heat from sunlight, severe sunburn, cold wind
  2. Food and drinks that can trigger flushing, including alcohol, food and beverages containing caffeine (especially, hot tea and coffee), foods high in histamines and spicy food. Foods high in histamine (red wine, aged cheeses, yogurt, beer, cured pork products such as bacon, etc.) can even cause persistent facial flushing in those individuals without rosacea due to a separate condition, histamine intolerance.
  3. Medications such as steroids induced rosacea is the term given to rosacea caused by the use of topical or nasal steroids. These steroids are often prescribed for seborrheic dermatitis. Dosage should be slowly decreased and not immediately stopped to avoid a flare up and topical irritants can quickly trigger rosacea.
  4. Some acne and wrinkle treatments that have been reported to cause rosacea include microdermabrasion and chemical peels
  5. Other factors includes emotional stress, anxiety and heavy exercises
  6. Incorrectly prescribed or used skin care or sensitivity to some of the ingredients in the products
  7. Unsuitable make up (also sensitivity to some of the ingredients)
  8. Hereditary factors

Rosacea symptoms may include some or all of these features permanently or intermittently

  • All face may have a rosy flushed tone
  • Burning or stinging sensation occurs with flushing
  • Rough skin giving it the appearance of dryness
  • An enlarged bulbous nose
  • Inflamed red bumps
  • Few or no blackheads or whiteheads
  • Small blood vessels visible under the skin
  • Swollen eyelids and a feeling of burning and tearing

Rosacea Classification

By symptoms and severity Rosacea can be classified into 4 categories.

  1. Flare-ups, the initial stage of rosacea with intermittent facial flushing and redness
  2. Permanent redness,  erythema and swelling, more often affects women
  3. Inflammatory rosacea, appears as pimples and pink coloured bumps with small blood vessels telangiectasias showing under the surface of the skin.
  4. Rhinophyma, shows enlarged red bulbous nose covered with large bumps mostly affects men. Small blood vessels visible near the surface of the skin (telangiectasias) may be present.

Rosacea solutions by cost

  1. Diet. Stay away from rosacea food triggers might result in a reduction in symptoms.
  2. Makeups to hide the redness quickly
  3. Using mineral based sunscreen to eliminate symptoms that may be caused by the sun. And using it during the entire year.
  4. Skin Care is probably one of the most important factors in controlling symptoms on ongoing basis. Cleansers, Serums and Creams should all be chosen very carefully. The ingredients must be hydrating but not cause any irritation. You need to hydrate and protect the skin and calm redness and flare-ups.

We recommend Medic8 Red Alert Cleanser and Serum which provides intensive and calming relief caused by skin hypersensitivity and utilises the latest cosmeceutical discoveries – Teprenone.

teprenone The addition of Teprenone helps with vein-wall strengthening, as well as promoting a reduction in skin erythema (redness) and prolong the life of skin cells. Teprenone has demonstrated a reduction of erythema by 30%, after just 30 days of topical application. The combination of vitamin K and Teprenone make this the perfect choice for rosacea prone skins.
  5. Ipl treatment or photofacials are a fantastic, quick and effective method which reduces redness, eliminates visible blood vessels, and diminishes flushing. This treatment option can be safely combined with many other rosacea therapies.

IPL PhotoFacial facts

VPL photo rejuvenation treatment can help control the symptoms of rosacea, reducing redness and inflammation. The light energy is absorbed by the enlarged, visible blood vessels, and the associated heating helps break these down. The body then recognises these broken vessels as waste and removes them naturally. and laser equipment used in the operation can actually do four treatments in one-month intervals.

Recent studies conclude that IPL can safely and effectively reduce the following signs of rosacea in many patients:

  1. Dilated blood vessels
  2. Persistent redness
  3. Flushing
  4. Acne-like breakouts

One research paper study looked at the effects of IPL treatment on the persistent redness, flushing, and breakouts associated with rosacea. In this study, 32 patients received between one and seven IPL treatments. Following treatment, 83% experienced reduced redness, 75% said they had less flushing and improved skin texture, and 64% reported fewer acne-like breakouts.

Photofacial advantages over conventional cosmetic procedures:

  • No downtime, sessions are fast. You can continue with your daily routine after. After treatment, many patients say that their skin feels slightly more warm but comfortable.
  • Free of side-effects. Short term side-effects are generally related to redness and swelling. Your physician's experience, skills using IPL devices and in-depth medical knowledge of the skin can reduce the possibility of the side effects to almost zero.
  • There is no damage to the surrounding skin tissue and no scarring compared to other ablative rosacea treatments like laser resurfacing.

While the number of treatments varies, most people require 4 to 8 treatment sessions per year for a few years to significantly reduce redness and flushing. For most patients, at least 2 treatments are needed to diminish visible blood vessels. Once the desired results are seen, patients may not need treatment again for some time. A few patients have reported that their redness and flushing did not return for 7 or 8 years.

To investigate the safety and effectiveness, four patients with dilated blood vessels and persistent redness received five IPL treatments, which were given at three-week intervals. Patients averaged a 30% drop in blood flow, a 29% reduction in visible blood vessels, and a 21% decrease in redness. Since only four patients were evaluated, these numbers cannot predict how people with rosacea in general will respond. Some dermatologists believe, IPL is more effective than these numbers indicate.

However not everyone is candidate for IPL photo facial, clotting disorder, tendency to develop keloids, insulin-dependent diabetes and other medical conditions are contraindicates to get IPL for rosacea. That may increase your risk of developing an infection or problems with wound healing.
